In the spring of 2005 Chief Ray Looking Glass Lussier of the Southern New England Indian Council in Attleboro, Massachusetts made a long term gifting loan of over 1800 artifacts to the Abenaki Clan of the Hawk, in Evansville, Vermont. This collection, which Chief Lussier started when he was just nine years old and worked on throughout his entire life, is a one-of-a-kind aquisition. It consists of arrowheads, axes, spears, stones and other artifacts.
In 2006, we dedicated the museum in his honor and officially named it the Looking Glass Museum. We remodeled our museum to properly display this gift, and we continue to increase our own collection, which features many original old photos, baskets, mounted wildlife and implements of daily life.
recent acquisitions include a Mohawk Beaded Garrison Hat circa 1890; a Casa Grande black lizard effigy covered pot; a splint ash basket made by Dorris Neptune; several ash bark baskets made by Jennifer Lee and a full size man and ladies Abenaki ribbon work regalia display; a gift of 100 or more arrowheads gathered from Essex and Orleans Counties plus 100 books about Native Americans. We are in the process of photographing and cataloging our collection.
