3 SISTERS GARDENThis year we decided that our 3 Sisters Garden should be up near the Museum. Lorene and Marvin hand turned the garden and then we had Marvin till it. We had traditional corn seed contributed by Nathan Pero. Also we planted Boston Marrow Squash seeds from The Old Stone House Museum in Brownington, VT. The beans were soldier beans from Chief. In the extra space we planted potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. Lorene and Marvin made a wattle fence to surround the garden.
Boston Marrow Squash (cucurbita Maxima) is a mid-size winter squash that has a custard-like, buttery flavor with almost 200 years of documented history, although probably of prehistoric origin. The squash originated in the upstate New York area and its legend as a Native American vegetable gifted to European-descended gardeners links it to traditional American history. It is a good storage crop, for if kept in a cool and dry place it will last until the following spring.
As you can see in the photos this squash really outdid itself with 28 large squash and one that weighed 50 pounds and won the contest the Old Stone House Museum held.
